When a mutilated body of an African American girl is found in a park sandbox, the media shows no interest. Instead, their attention is riveted on the disappearance of Olivia Safra, a college student and only child of the powerful and dangerous Richard Safra. Suspended ADA, Beck Oldman, demoted to a rookie PI is assigned her first cases to find a missing teenager and Olivia Safra.

Leads connect the murders to the Safra case. The investigation into her client's private life reveals a dark side in the relationship between a father and daughter and exacts his wrath against Beck. More girls are found murdered, putting Beck in a race to stop a serial killer and stop her own client from destroying her.

PURIFIED is a thrilling story that explores many dark subjects, including what it does to those who have to live in the world of killers in order to stop them.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
The most difficult aspect of writing, books and screenplays, is getting down to the business of daily writing. Sometimes I have to fight the nagging voice that taunts, “who will want to read this” why do you think you have something to say. These thoughts are not unique to me, thankfully I have heard this from many artistic people.

What songs are most played on your MP3?
I listen to a lot of jazz, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Billie Holiday. I love the blues. Pink Floyd is named in Purified and in its sequel. Radio Head, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mozart and Beethoven. Music is humanity’s soul or at least our soundtrack. I don’t restrict myself to any one genre or artist.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
I have a couple of fellow writers who exchange work and make corrections and critique. It is not organized and as we live far apart we miss the face-to-face exchange which I think is critical. Recently I joined a writers’ group where I hope I can join some critique groups.

What book are you reading now?
I am just about to finish Jo Nesbo’s The Redeemer. I am hooked on the Nordic (not sure if Nordic is the correct term) crime writers, with Nesbo at the top of the list. I am starting a book which concept is really fascinating of an African American sleuth in New Orleans in the early 1830’s entitled A Free Man of Color.

How did you start your writing career?
Reading started my writing. The magic of words to transport me to a world that was completely different than mine inspired me to write but life took over and the career did not happen. The event that got me to pursue writing as a second careeer occurred when I was writing a novel and heard a story on CSPAN about girls riding trains in the Depression. I put the novel in the drawer, wrote a screenplay, and entered a competition. When I earned second place, the career aspect was put into place.

Tell us about your next release.
Currently I am currently working on the sequel to Purified. I never considered I would revisit these characters. I have written five screenplays, all of different genres and to be honest, thriller, noir, mysteries are the most difficult as one has to create clues and motivation for murder. Beck is a flawed character and I think she is rich for transformation. Safra has become to me Beck’s Moriarty so I need to do this villain justice in his return.
